Oil and Gas Industry Urges EU to Pause Methane Emissions Law

Issuing time:2026-03-12 17:00

Industry groups are calling on the European Union to delay its upcoming methane emissions regulation, warning that the rules could affect fuel imports and market stability.

Associations including the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers and FuelsEurope have requested a pause before stricter compliance requirements are scheduled to take effect in 2027.

According to industry analysis, up to 43% of EU natural gas imports and 87% of crude oil imports could face difficulties meeting the regulation’s methane monitoring and reporting standards. Companies argue that the policy may create compliance challenges for international suppliers and could potentially lead to supply disruptions or increased costs.

EU policymakers, however, have indicated that the methane rules remain a key component of the bloc’s broader climate strategy aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the energy sector.

The debate underscores the ongoing challenge of balancing energy security with climate objectives, as Europe continues to reshape its energy system.
